The culture of Egypt has several very famous dancers among which the most important are RAKS BALADY and RAKS SHARKI (Classico).
The use of RAKS may have a more recent origin, possibly in the days of British Colonialism. From 1882 the beginning of the Belle Epoque to 1952 music and dance Western style took over the arts in Egypt. As a reaction to this there emerged a very strong emotional pride in what was authentically Egyptian--Arabic.
